Born in 1973 on the island of Shikoku, Hiro Ando is a versatile Japanese contemporary artist. After starting out as an illustrator, he quickly founded an artists’ studio through which he supports the creative work and manages the promotion of other artists starting out in neo-pop. Committed to the traditional values of his country while bringing a resolutely modern perspective to them, Hiro Ando is now considered one of the greatest neo-pop artists in the land of the rising sun. Although he started out as an illustrator, he also excels as a painter (oil painting) and sculptor. He has also experimented with video and other digital media. It was through his work with oil on canvas that Hiro Ando gained significant recognition. His paintings, reminiscent of traditional Japanese watercolors, are exhibited throughout Tokyo. It is always with respect for his country’s traditions that Hiro Ando takes an interest in sculpted art. Here again, the artist excels in a clever blend of tradition and modernity.
His creations include Hello Kitty, The Panda, The Samurai, and The Maneki-Neko (Lucky Cat). The artist adapts them in his own way, varying techniques, materials, and colors. His talent and work take us on a nonstop journey to the Land of the Rising Sun. Hiro Ando crafts his sculptures from resin, bronze, porcelain, and even diamonds.
The artist’s anthropomorphic animal figures offer a contemporary reinterpretation of one of Japan’s most iconic figures, the maneki-neko, or lucky cat, which takes on different forms such as a samurai or a sumo wrestler.
Through his smooth, shiny materials in bright colors and raw, rounded shapes, Hiro Ando transports us to the manga world of Tokyo at a glance.
